As she sat by the fire in Philadelphia in 1776 sewing that first American flag, it's unlikely that Betsy Ross had any inkling that she was starting a key trend for the 'noughties'!
According to the fashion pundits, the five pointed star is the only symbol to be wearing in 2008 and either on its own or mixed with stripes in blue, white or red, the look is now filtering through to interiors.
But as with any trend, less is often more and it generally works best when adapted to your own personal style. Vertical stripes are a great way to make small windows look taller and stars add a fun splash of colour and magic, especially in children's bedrooms.
