Vertical blinds are a popular choice for covering large windows and patio doors as they're cost effective and come in a variety of colours and fabrics. They can also be pulled neatly to one side to make the most of a pretty view or to allow easy access through a patio door.
And although Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys, believes verticals have well and truly moved out of the office to become a window dressing that combines great functionality with chic, even retro appeal, she accepts that they're not for everyone.
"Verticals have always been popular as they're such a practical and versatile window dressing option, especially for large windows and patio or French doors." says Sarah.
"However the perfect contemporary alternative for floor to ceiling windows and patio doors is the panel blind," continues Sarah. "The panels come in three different widths - 30cm, 45cm and 60cm and glide on a track operated by either a sidewinder chain or a wand.
Each panel cleverly picks up the next when opening and closing. They can stack to the left or the right, or split in the middle to stack either side, like a pair of curtains.
The Hillarys system is available in a wide range of different fabrics, to suit any style or taste from a vivid orange to contemporary charcoal, suede, a basket weave effect, aqua and a trendy seventies style print.
Panel blinds or sliding panels as they were called, originated in Japan more than 500 years ago as a simple way to partition rooms.
"Unlike many European homes which tend to be crammed with furniture, cushions and nic-nacks, a Japanese room will look almost empty by comparison," says Sarah. "Clean lines help to create a tranquil, harmonious feel - a perfect antidote to our busy and often stressful lives."
"And as open plan living becomes increasingly popular, panel blinds are a great way to create zones within that space."
