2010 is the year of bold prints, stripes and textures and floral patterns
"A general attitude of "mix and match" and "more is less" will be key in our approach to interior design in 2010," says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys, the UK's leading supplier of made to measure blinds and shutters. "That's because today's home is all about creating a tranquil and liveable space, with a focus on simplicity, cosiness and functionality.
"Bold florals, pared down 'Gustavian' style, English 'kitsch' and textured fabrics are four of the key trends we're going to be seeing in our homes during this season," she adds.
"Shutters are also becoming one of the fastest growing window treatments as people seek to invest in their homes. They can add value to your property as well as giving fabulous privacy and light control and a sleek, stylish appearance."
Bold florals
"The power of flowers is always popular in interiors, but the look is modern and eclectic, in fact almost veering on brash, rather than sweet and ditzy."
Gustavian style
"Gustavian style which is a blend of Swedish and French design will also continue to be a major influence in interiors over the coming months. Gustavian flair works brilliantly in all types of interiors, from cottages to loft apartments and from town houses to traditional and new builds. Rooms inspired by this period are warm and inviting and full of light hand painted furniture, pale walls and comforting curvy shapes."
"Thanks to a fashion for retro revivalism (the Cath Kidston effect), an eclectic mix of furniture and accessories offset with pretty vintage style blinds evokes comforting memories of a time gone by."
"Fabrics that are made up of differing textures are also going to be key this year with flock giving a sumptuous look that works brilliantly in period homes. Stripes also remain a popular choice for interiors and for 2010 the look is grown-up, graphic and monochrome."
Open plan living
"An open plan space for living, eating and cooking has become the ideal for modern family life. Keep it simple for an uncluttered feel and add roller blinds in a contemporary funky floral design to add warmth and colour."
Plum
"Plum is a strong colour contender and we see that going through the whole of 2010."
Shutters
"Shutters work well in both contemporary and period properties and as people seek to invest in their homes, are in increasing demand."
Hillarys shutters start at £253 per square metre, measured, made and fitted.
