For Spring 2012

Sarah Quilliam is head of product design for Hillarys, the UK’s largest supplier of made to measure window dressings and therefore responsible for what more than half a million windows will be ‘wearing’ this season!

“Interior design trends often collide with fashion and generally tend to mirror global mood,” says Sarah. “Across all generations, family is more important than ever, and people are placing more emphasis on making their homes a safe and cocooning retreat and base for entertaining. As the economic situation forces people to stay where they live, so our taste in interiors takes a change of direction. Gone are the days of stark minimalism and ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ -staying put means adding comfort and turning your house into a real home, creating relaxing, cosy and personal rooms.

There are no hard and fast rules to follow in order to achieve this. While we may never entirely tire of neutrals, interior styles have become much more individual, mis-matched and quirky. Hard times call for high hopes and we want colour, pattern and the simplicity of nature around us.

Eye-popping and vibrant, bright colour combinations fly in the face of muted palettes and concerns about the economy! It’s time to stand out from the crowd and wake up your senses with cobalt blue, tangerine, lime, coral and fuchsia pink, with ideally at least two of them clashing!

Stripes, spots and florals are part of the British fabric of life and remain a popular choice for interiors. We’re seeing a real revival in chintzy florals and quintessentially British looks as interior trends capture the bulldog spirit that comes to the fore during austere times.
