‘Green’ school fits blinds

Friday, June 25th, 2010

'Green' school fits blinds An eco-conscious London school has fitted blinds to bolster its green commitments.

Archdeacon Cambridge’s Church of England Primary School in Twickenham, London, has taken a pro-active stance in promoting environmental issues to its pupils and the local community.

Etain Gibson, the school’s deputy head, told This is Local London that green matters should feature high on everybody’s agenda to combat the ongoing threat of climate change.

"We have held blackout weeks where everyone is extra conscious of lights, computers and overhead projectors being off and blinds open," she said.

The school has even been awarded a Green Flag in recognition of its environmentally-friendly approach.

Talking about the school’s overall green goals, the teacher also told the news provider that it is aiming to cut down on the size of its carbon footprint.

According to EDG Energy and the Energy Futures Lab, people should take individual responsibility for making their properties and lifestyles more conducive to energy efficiency.ADNFCR-3100-ID-19858269-ADNFCR

Blinds perfect for sun room

Blinds perfect for sun roomA sun room is the first port of call for many homeowners on a glorious summer’s day and blinds can improve the look and feel of the space.

Bev and Craig St Charles told the Daily Herald that their sun room was the ideal space to get away from it all, even if their busy lifestyle prevents them from using it as frequently as they would like.

"We don’t spend as much time out there as I wish we did," said Mrs St Charles."But it’s lovely to go out and sit and read. I use it more than anything to entertain my girlfriends since we can see the outside better there than in the more closed-in kitchen."

On particularly hot days it is advantageous to have blinds as they can help keep the heat out, and yet during cooler evenings they are effective at trapping heat in.

Design expert Linda Barker said yellow and cream tones are the optimal colours for rooms that receive a lot of sunlight.

Beat the summer heat with blinds

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Beat the summer heat with blindsThe summer sun can make home unbearably hot, but the answer could lie in the choice of window dressing, one website has said.

According to a JustMeans.com article, entitled ‘Summer’s hot, but your house doesn’t have to be,’ many people fail to make the necessary changes to their homes in preparation for the new season.

But there are some simple solutions to the problem, the website says, as simply by fitting blinds, a property can be much more effective in keeping a property both light and cool.

"To allow sunlight in to reduce the amount of lights used during the day, but also keep excessive heat at bay, one could opt for blinds and adjust throughout the hours," the website advises.

Blinds can help to drastically reduce the intensity of the sun’s heat and are especially useful in conservatories.

According to HomesandGardens.com, blinds can play a big role in making conservatories more eco-friendly.

Top Tips for Winter Conservatories

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Winter’s coming up quickly if you’re looking for blinds for your conservatory in the coming months then take a look at our top tips:

Beware of bright winter sun

It’s easy to turn a blind eye when it comes to the winter sun, but it can be just as harmful as glorious summer sunshine, which is why it’s always a good idea to stop your carpets and interior furnishings from fading. Blinds are therefore a great solution. And by fitting verticals, you’ll easily be able to control the light round the sides of your conservatory.

Don’t let your conservatory cool down

During the chilly winter season, your conservatory might become rather cold and dreary. Pleated blinds are an ideal way to combat this as they are available in a wide range of specialist fabrics, which will help retain that much-needed heat. You can fit pleateds into your roof for maximum warmth and then choose any other blind style and colour for around the sides.

Never neglect the space

By integrating the conservatory into the rest of your home, it will have more of a purpose so you could ideally go into it every day. With Christmas and New Year’s Eve on the horizon, why not make it into a jazzy games room to celebrate and dance the night away. And when your friends have had one too many glasses of bubbly, you could offer up your new conservatory bedroom for them to sleep it off! Or if you’d just like somewhere to chill out, pull a cracker or even carve up the turkey, a lounge or dining room would make the perfect, easy choice, making the most of your valuable space.

Pleated blinds start at £76 (46cm wide x 91cm drop) measured, made and fitted.
