Back to school – blinds for kids rooms and studies

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Kids can be very hard to please, but luckily you still have the upper hand! Redecorating is a great way to treat your child and Hillarys blinds is just the place to start. Regardless of what style or design you are looking for, odds are you will find what you are looking for.

If there isn’t a colour or fabric in the range you like you can even personalise a blind with any image you like. It really couldn’t be easier, they allow you to upload any image when you visit web blinds.com. All you need to do it enter the measurements of your desired blinds and within 10 working days you will have your brand new, customised blinds.

By using roller blinds you could create a partition in your child’s room to create a tiny study for him/her to do their homework in. It is great to get your kids into the habit of working in a certain spot from a young age. So find a suitable space in their room to create a workspace in and you could even let them choose the design so that it is something they really like and even look forward to pulling down.

There are so many options when it comes to decorating your child’s room and creating a little workspace for him/her, but remember to have fun and encourage them to get involved and decide what they want, it could turn out to be a great parent/child activity.

Blind ambition gets Hillarys Blinds into the record books!

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Hillarys Blinds has made it into the 2008 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records as the manufacturer of the world’s biggest vertical blind. The blind, measuring 20m wide and 8.3 metres high – 75 times the size of a normal vertical blind - was made to mark the official opening of the company’s new factory in Washington, Tyne & Wear in January 2003.

“Our record breaking attempt to create the world’s largest vertical blind was one approach to celebrate the launch in a really unusual way,” said David Burke, manufacturing director at Hillarys. “It was a feat of engineering to make a blind of these proportions and although it was a verified as a world record back in 2003, we’re delighted that it now not only appears in the latest edition of the Guinness Book of Records but actually on the flysheet.”

The blind was unveiled by Denise Welch, who is currently starring as Steph Haydock in Waterloo Road and was a former landlady of the Rover’s Return in Coronation Street.

New Verticals Collection

If you want a bit of pulling power in your home, you’ve got to get vertical… that’s the message from Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys. She is of course talking about vertical blinds, the current bestseller at the UK’s leading supplier of blinds and shutters. And March sees the launch of a brand new collection, the highlight of which is a striking mix n’ match range that allows you to mix n’match the louvres to create your own bespoke blind. You can combine prints with plains or any number of co-ordinating or contrasting colourways within the selection.Other ranges in the collection include Shimmer, Retro and Textures. Prices start from £45 (50cm wide x 90cm drop) measured, made and fitted.

Sliding panels

Hillarys is adding sliding panel blinds to its product portfolio. A stunning modern alternative to curtains and blinds, a sliding panel will add an extra dash of contemporary style and function to windows. They’re an effective way of controlling the light and also work really well to screen off sections of a room to create a totally new space – with very little effort. The system is available in a wide range of beautiful fabrics to suit any style or taste from orange and aqua to charcoal, suede, a basket weave effect and a retro seventies style print. (more…)

Top Tips for Winter Conservatories

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Winter’s coming up quickly if you’re looking for blinds for your conservatory in the coming months then take a look at our top tips:

Beware of bright winter sun

It’s easy to turn a blind eye when it comes to the winter sun, but it can be just as harmful as glorious summer sunshine, which is why it’s always a good idea to stop your carpets and interior furnishings from fading. Blinds are therefore a great solution. And by fitting verticals, you’ll easily be able to control the light round the sides of your conservatory.

Don’t let your conservatory cool down

During the chilly winter season, your conservatory might become rather cold and dreary. Pleated blinds are an ideal way to combat this as they are available in a wide range of specialist fabrics, which will help retain that much-needed heat. You can fit pleateds into your roof for maximum warmth and then choose any other blind style and colour for around the sides.

Never neglect the space

By integrating the conservatory into the rest of your home, it will have more of a purpose so you could ideally go into it every day. With Christmas and New Year’s Eve on the horizon, why not make it into a jazzy games room to celebrate and dance the night away. And when your friends have had one too many glasses of bubbly, you could offer up your new conservatory bedroom for them to sleep it off! Or if you’d just like somewhere to chill out, pull a cracker or even carve up the turkey, a lounge or dining room would make the perfect, easy choice, making the most of your valuable space.

Pleated blinds start at £76 (46cm wide x 91cm drop) measured, made and fitted.

How to choose shutters

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

Shutters are a fabulous window dressing and can actually add to the value of your home. But as they are more expensive than other window treatments, it’s really worth doing your homework to make sure you get it right. So to make your choice a little easier, here are some handy pointers to help you get the perfect result.

  • Room – the room you’re thinking of fitting shutters into plays an important part in the type of shutter you go for.
  • Budget – decide how much you want to spend, as the wood ranges vary in price.
  • Use – you can fit shutters against sash or bay windows, French doors and even use them as room dividers, as well as the conventional window.
  • Shutter style – the amount of light and privacy you’d like depends on the room and where it is situated.
  • Wood range – when choosing a white painted finish or natural wood stain, consider the style of room, colour scheme, furnishings and budget.
  • Mid rail – you can have a mid rail fitted to a full-height shutter as an optional extra for more light control, but on certain heights you’ll need to have one.
  • Frame – these can be made to fit on the outside or inside of the recess of your window to complete the look.
  • Hinges – fittings are available in a choice of colours and finishes to match or contrast with your shutter, depending upon the look and feel you wish to create.
  • Installation – a perfect fit is essential so use an expert to measure and fit.
