New Venetian blinds a must for 2010?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Making changes to decor like installing new Venetian or Roman blinds could be on the cards for house owners as they look to improve their properties in 2010.

Installing new Venetian blinds or furniture could be on the agenda for property owners in 2010 according to a recently released report.

Extending a property or making renovations might be the more attractive proposition than moving house for homeowners over the next 12 months, according to housing expert, Duncan Hayes of Build It magazine.

Commenting on anticipated trends across the housing market, Hayes stated: “I would imagine that you will continue to see the trend of people staying put and extending and renovating and doing work on their own.”

Property renovations can take on many different forms – from something as simple as installing new made to measure blinds to a complete overhaul of the kitchen or bedroom.

However, it is perhaps understandable that consumers have slight reservations about making grand changes in the current economic climate.

B&Q revealed sales were down 1.6 per cent in the 13 weeks up until the end of January 2010 compared to the figures from the previous year.

Summer at your windows (even in Autumn and Winter)

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Summer has offically ended, but that doesn’t mean it has to start getting freezing in your home just yet! Why not brighten up your windows (and consequently the rooms they’re in) by installing some brighter, lighter coloured blinds?

Scientific studies have proved that people tend to be happier and cheerier when surrounded by “happy” colours that include:

  • Pink
  • White
  • Violet
  • Orange
  • Green
  • Yellow

These colours all have different influences on people, pink is a comforting colour, but not as aggressive as red. White is the purest colour available and gives the impression of clean, crisp and serenity. Violet is a tricky one, but the right shade can provide a very warm cosy, almost bohemian atmosphere in any home. Orange is another warm colour, not quite red and a little warmer than yellow, orange in the right dosage can warm up any home! Yellow creates a lovely warm summery feel, bright and cheery, but remember – in moderation! The right shades of green can be very peaceful and calming creating a very natural atmosphere and its soothing effects will amaze you.

Web-blinds also offer another great innovation that allows you to print your holiday (or any other photos) on your blinds so that you can hang on to your summer for a little while longer.

So regardless of what route you choose to take, be sure to do your homework and research regarding the colour of your blinds because you want to create warmth and energy, not frighten all of your guests!

Do your windows look good naked?

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Thanks to numerous style makeover shows, Sarah Quilliam, head of product design for Hillarys, believes that a large proportion of the nation’s female population are likely to know their body shape and how to dress it but wonders if the same is true when it comes to making the most of their home’s best asset.

“We’re learning how to dress our pear, apple or hourglass physique to best effect and maybe even how to relax and relish in looking good naked!” says Sarah.

“But are we as savvy when it comes to dressing and accessorising our homes? Many of the same principles of proportion, colour and style can be applied to one of our home’s greatest assets – the windows!

“Like bodies, it’s very unlikely that any two windows will be identical and even in the same house it’s very probable that they’ll be a variety of different styles, shapes and sizes. Before deciding on what window dressing to use, first consider the shape and proportions of your window in relation to the rest of the room and whether its position may pose any limitation on the type of treatment you can use.

“Here are some rules and tips for highlighting their assets and minimising their flaws -  and, if you are indeed tempted to practise how to look good naked then you really do need to make sure that your window at least is properly dressed!”

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

If you‘re looking for a stylish window dressing then why not consider Shutters – Hillarys has a range of Shutter styles - tier on tier, cafe style and full height all of which offer privacy and light control.

And if you do decide to Shutters who better to go to than the UK’s market leader in made-to-measure Shutters – something that Hillarys Blinds has achieved within just 18 months of launching the product.

Shutters are doing for windows what plasma is doing for television,” says John Risman, chief executive of the Hillarys group. “Widely regarded as the ultimate in window dressings, the market for shutters has grown by 40 per cent in 2007 and we’re delighted that Hillarys has gained the largest share of that in such a short space of time.”

Mr Risman attributes this to the company’s unique ability to bring a quality product to a mass market with speed and affordability. “We believe that our scale and unique service proposition of measuring and fitting means that we can bring a top-end product to a wider audience all over the UK at a reasonable price – no other company has the ability to do that within the lead times that we offer.”

He also believes that shutters are viewed as an investment and an opportunity to provide a greater level of security. “Shutters offer an additional set of benefits to other window treatments,” adds Mr Risman. “People are seeing them as a fashionable way of increasing the value of their homes, something that is becoming more and more important if the housing market is due to get a little tougher”.

“The product has proved so popular that we’re launching a wider range which will include a choice of custom matched colours and shaped shutters to fit arched or awkward shaped windows.”
