Clean dirty windows and blinds for summer

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Clean dirty windows and blinds for summerSummer is the one time of year when dirt and grime will show up more than ever, and one expert is advising homeowners to lend some serious thought to their window dressings.

Kate Watson-Smyth’s article for the Independent highlights the importance of sprucing up windows and blinds to make sure a home is ready to shine in the summer.

"Not only does the sunlight streaming through reveal just how dusty your windows are, but the frames might also need painting. This is a perfect summer job, as any weak spots and damage will have been exacerbated over the long winter months," she says.

To tackle dirty window panes, Ms Watson-Smyth suggests mixing a solution of one part vinegar and one part warm water to spray on them before wiping them clean with a dry cloth followed by crumpled newspaper.

Blinds should also be given a thorough wipe down to keep them looking at their best.

According to JustMeans.com, blinds can also help keep a house cool when the summer heat reaches its height.

Architect fits vertical blinds in stylish design

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Architect fits vertical blinds in stylish designA leading architect has fitted blinds in a redesigned apartment in the American city of Seattle, reports the Seattle Times.

Jim Olson wanted to create a space which afforded optimum views to the surrounding cityscape, and opted for ceiling-to-floor glass windows, adorned with vertical blinds.

Kathy Ferguson and her husband, Gordon, are the lucky inhabitants of the 4,200-square-foot property in the Millennium Tower, and they told the news provider they were amazed by the transformation.

The couple wanted to be able to showcase their vast collection of paintings and pieces of modern art, and Olson’s design allowed them to do this, making the most of the natural light.

Included in the Ferguson’s collection is a collection of life-size sculptural figures and minimalist paintings.

Olson specialises in residential properties and in 2007 his work was recognised by the city’s local architecture society when he was awarded the Seattle AIA Medal of Honour.

Blinds “a good choice” for eco-friendly home

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Blinds can help make a home more environmentally friendly and cut back on energy bills, according to AnnArbor.com.

The issue of climate change has forced many people to consider the impact their own lifestyle has on the environment.

There are many ways of making a property more eco-friendly and fitting blinds is a good start as they can improve energy efficiency.

"Interior blinds, either horizontal or vertical, are a good choice because the slats can be used to control light and ventilation in the summer," the website added.

In addition, appliances with high energy efficiency ratings can help to save money and the environment, and during the warm summer months heating should not be left on while windows are open.

AtHomeMagazine.com also recently advised that blinds can play a big part in an eco-home, helping to reduce the impact on both the environment and a homeowner’s wallet.

Accessorise a white bathroom with blinds

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Accessorise a white bathroom with blindsAdding accessories and textiles to a plain white bathroom can transform it from being bland to chic, Ideal Home Magazine has said.

Describing a white bathroom as a "blank canvas", the home and lifestyle publication said that with just a few relatively cheap additions, it can be made to look "chic and timeless".

Monochrome accessories go well in a predominantly white setting, while accessories with spotty motifs add "a touch of fun", and this can be accompanied by plantation shutters for added style.

For a more relaxed feel, akin to a spa, accessorising with wooden features creates more warmth, and many retailers offer wooden towel rails, soap holders and other fixtures.

To complete the look, wooden venetian blinds match perfectly with this kind of scheme in a bathroom.

Property expert Sarah Beeny said in an article for Athomemagazine.com that having exposed brickwork in a bathroom can create an organic feel.

Wood venetian blinds ‘versatile and elegant’

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Wood venetian blinds 'versatile and elegant'Wood venetian blinds can add "timeless elegance" to any space and can easily be incorporated into any theme, according to an expert.

Interior designer Mike Lee said their versatility and classy appearance made them an ideal choice for a variety of rooms.

Another advantage of wood venetian blinds is their ability to "look amazing" when used as a window treatment on either side of the window recess, he said.

They come in a variety of colours, enabling them to fit easily into all sorts of colours schemes, as Mr Lee explained:"For rooms big in size, colours that enhance the look of the room are deep natural colors like chestnut and oak.

"Rich red mahogany compliments the decors that are red and green in color. Along with this it also beautifies the dressing of window in dining rooms having polished mahogany tables."

According to Channel4.com, wood venetian blinds are on trend this summer, as natural materials are back in vogue.

Function over form when deciding on blinds

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Function over form when deciding on blindsA number of considerations need to be weighed up when deciding what type of window treatment to choose in a room, according to 101homeresources.com.

The website advises that, as much as style matters, functionality should always be the primary concern when looking at the pros and cons of blinds and other window dressings.

"Several functional issues must be addressed before you consider styles, fabrics and colours. If you spend time considering these aspects, you will save time and frustration later," the home decorating website says.

Included among those issues are thoughts about the level of privacy required, the exposure of the room, whether the window is needed for ventilation and how much light control is desired.

Once these aspects have been analysed, thoughts can turn to style and the best colour choices, the website concludes.

According to Simplyfurnishings.com, form and function need to be considered in equal measure when decorating a room.

Blinds are ideal for a home cinema

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Blinds are ideal for a home cinemaCreating a home cinema can bring all the fun of the movies to a living room, and it’s easy to do.

A variety of blinds can be fitted to add to the cinematic feel, while shutters are also a suitable choice, according to an essortment.com article.

For those who already have the technology in their homes, such as speakers and a large flat screen TV or even a projector, it is just a case of fitting it all properly.

And it doesn’t have to ruin the overall look of a house either, the article advises, as speakers can be stored on shelves, which is "more attractive than seeing a black box stuck to the wall".

In addition, reclining sofas are great for adding extra comfort and creating the illusion of actually being in a movie theatre.

According to a previous essortment.com article, modern TVs are now so visually appealing they can form the centre piece of a room.

Accessorise a room with blinds without clutter

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

Accessorise a room with blinds without clutterAccessorising a room doesn’t have to lead to clutter, according to an expert.

Susie Coelho, a decorating guru, told iVillage.com that using accessories without creating clutter is "a common decorating problem" but she said there were solutions.

In a room with blinds, a lot of objects can be incorporated without the space being overpowered, provided there is consistency in the theme, said Ms Coelho.

Those wanting to display collectibles should have sufficient shelf and cabinet space to display them, while glass-fronted cabinets are ideal for storing accessories without them being in the way.

She said the beauty of accessories is that they are often small and can easily be rearranged, so homeowners are advised to try a few different looks, safe in the knowledge they can always change it around.

According to an article on HomeInteriorDecorating.co.uk, stylish storage solutions are the answer to the problem of clutter.

Blinds are fine for a ‘pet-friendly home’

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Blinds are fine for a 'pet-friendly home'Homeowners with pets may find that blinds are the ideal window dressing.
According to a Housing Watch article, several things need to be considered when trying to create a pet-friendly property.

Things such as curtains and drapes may become the target of over-zealous dogs, but the more durable nature of blinds, and the fact some types are not designed to reach down to the floor, makes them a safer bet.

The website also advises opting for a dark colour scheme to hide some of the marks that a pet might make, while easy-to-clean hard surface are definitely preferable to carpets, which can quickly wear thin.

Ensuring that none of the household’s pot plants are poisonous to animals is also vital, and air fresheners are a must, the article concludes.

Research conducted in 2008 revealed that 43 per cent of UK households have at least one pet, with dogs being the most popular.

Lighten up a home with blinds

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Lighten up a home with blindsDesigning a home to make the most of natural light requires attention to detail, according to an expert.

Paul McRandle, editor of Simplesteps.org, told the Edmonton Journal that nothing could bring life to an interior space quite like the light given off by the sun or the night sky.

But every base needs to be covered in order to gain the maximum benefit from natural light sources, including opting for the right choice of window dressing.

He advised opting for blinds, adding that wooden reflective flooring and white walls with a glossy finish help to reflect light around the space.

In addition, fitting plenty of mirrors not only enables light to be bounced around the interior of a home, but they also add to the sense of space.

Interior designer Marie Taylor recently told Nola.com that establishing a link between the interior and exterior of a property, such as via a courtyard, made it much more appealing.
