The lifestyle specialist says old furniture can be adapted to solve the problem of clutter in a small room, such as a child’s bedroom or a study.
"An old bookcase can easily be transformed into a craft cupboard by making a pretty fabric curtain to hide all sorts of practical bits and bobs," the website advises.
In hallways, where space is at a premium, slim-line wooden storage boxes can be used to tidy away shoes.
For added organisation in a study room, letter trays and additional drawers can be used to store away unsightly piles of paper and stationery.
Kate Leach, home design advisor at John Lewis, recently told the Guardian that small rooms benefit from a practical approach to interior design. She advised homeowners to plan thoroughly and be open to compromise.
