Function should be the key consideration when decorating a living room, according to an expert.

Kristin Abram, an interior designer who writes for Suite101.com, noted that living rooms are in constant use and need to be suited to hosting large numbers of people.

"Living rooms are a place where the family congregates for television, family time and games. So redecorate your living room with its function in mind. Create a decorating scheme that optimises the space and makes activities more convenient," she said.

Lighting is an important factor in creating the desired effect in a room and window blinds can enable a homeowner to make the most of both natural and artificial light.

They are also key features in enhancing the aesthetic appeal of a space and can help to bring a theme together by complementing other aspects of the room.

Ms Abrams also said that interior design projects can be ongoing and advised planning thoroughly before embarking on any plans to spruce up a home.
