    Questions on our blackout curtains?

Here are some of our frequently asked questions (FAQs) about blackout curtains. If you have a question about our service or your appointment, please see our general FAQs.

    What are blackout curtains?

Blackout curtains have a blackout curtain lining. This is heavier than a standard curtain lining and works to reduce the amount of light coming into the room. You can add a blackout lining to any of our beautiful made-to-measure curtains. Blackout curtains are ideal for bedrooms, nurseries and children’s rooms. They're also a wise choice for spaces where you would like to reduce glare, such as living rooms and home offices.

Do blackout curtains help you sleep?

Blackout curtains reduce the amount of light coming into a room, for a better night’s sleep. Blackout curtain linings can help to block out the sun’s rays or intrusive street lights. This makes made-to-measure blackout curtains a perfect choice for bedrooms, nurseries and children’s rooms.

Will Hillarys blackout curtains block out all the light?

Made-to-measure blackout curtains will significantly reduce the amount of light coming into your room. On brighter days, you may notice a small amount of light seeping around the edges of your curtains. For maximum darkness, you could consider layering blackout curtains over a blackout blind.

Do blackout curtains help control heat?

Yes, our blackout curtains have thermal properties too. During the winter months, blackout curtains can help to reduce heat loss through your windows and keep your home cosier. In summer, blackout curtains can help to keep your home cooler, by reducing the amount of heat that enters through your windows. You can add a blackout lining or thermal lining to any of our gorgeous made-to-measure curtains. For an extra snug feel, you could team blackout or thermal curtains with made-to-measure blinds.

    Can you wash blackout curtains?

All of our curtain fabrics are dry clean only, but there are plenty of ways to keep your blackout curtains fresh for longer. The easiest way to clean your blackout curtains is to use the soft brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner, designed for furniture and upholstery.
A hand held steam cleaner can also be used to remove any creases or wrinkles. Our curtains cleaning guide contains more handy hints on caring for your blackout curtains.

What colours are blackout curtains available in?

You can add a blackout lining to any of our fabulous made to measure curtains. This means a huge variety of colours to choose from, including beige, green, pink, black, and many more. There are plenty of ways to tailor your blackout curtains to your individual style, with a selection of patterned or plain designs and an array of sumptuous fabrics.

Do you need blackout curtains for bedrooms?

If you are sensitive to light and prefer a dark sleeping environment, blackout curtains can effectively block out external light sources. This can be especially beneficial if you live in an urban area with street lights or if your bedroom gets a lot of natural light. Blackout curtains can also help you create a sleep-friendly environment during daytime hours. For example if you work night shifts they can simulate nighttime darkness, promoting better sleep quality. Blackout linings also have insulating properties, helping to regulate room temperature and keep things nice and cosy.
