Hillarys brown curtains in a bedroom with pink roman blinds

The Nested Home

Feather your nest this winter

This delicately balanced design story artfully blends the raw beauty of winter with the warming notes of spring.

A bedroom with a large window fitted with a Voile Roman blind in Swirl Dusk

Like tiny snowdrops pushing through the frozen ground, this soft and subtle story is finely poised – not quite free of the icy grip of winter, but not yet ready to embrace the full flourish of spring. Misty morning greys, and swirling prints create an ethereal and transient look. Accessories have an organic feel, with rough surfaces and imperfect shapes that illuminate the maker’s craft. Wood surfaces are natural and untreated or polished to highlight the natural beauty of the grain. Textiles in linen, wool and semi-sheer fabrics are layered up to create a light but cosy atmosphere for hibernating away.

Create an away-from-it-all rustic look with bare floorboards, layered with vintage rugs in fade-out shades. Creamy neutrals and barely there pink hues bring subtle warmth, while rich amber adds heat and depth. In this gorgeous bedroom we’ve used wicker baskets and ladder storage to enhance the rustic feel, with hand-knitted throws, sheepskin rugs and plush cushions casually layered around the room for a textural, undone feel.

Chevron prints in blue-grey tones stand out like icy peaks against a daub of winter sky. Rough and raw concrete surfaces combine with luxe marble and smooth porcelain, evocative of a lakeside shoreline where gritty textures mix with silky stones rubbed smooth by the ebb and flow of the tide. Sculptural greenery adds stark drama to this coolly muted look.

Flexible light control is key to this brink-of-spring look. As the days get longer, it’s important to allow as much light into the home as possible, while at the same time incorporating enough cosiness to snuggle up until the warmer weather arrives. In this elegant living room, pale blue café style shutters provide immediate privacy, light and temperature control, but at the same time allow lots of sunlight into the room above eye level. Piles of plush cushions on the peachy sofa finish the fresh and inviting feel.

Celebrate all things natural with fresh floral displays and egg-speckled ceramics in tonal shades of sky blue, turquoise and indigo. In this sunny dining room, faux silk Roman blinds embroidered with dewy drops of pale blue embroidered thread cascade along the wide window, bouncing dappled light around the room while also providing a layer of textured warmth to keep off the winter chill.
