Create a vivid, fun and inspiring playroom with top tips from stylist, fashion journalist and brand consultant Erica Davies.

Erica Davies is no stranger to sharing her personal style with the nation. Through her influential lifestyle blog The Edited, she regularly opens the doors of the new build property she shares with her husband and two children to show how - room by room - she is slowly transforming the space from nondescript white box to personality-packed gorgeousness. We’re huge fans of Erica, and are delighted to be working with her to help create this wonderful family home, complete with dedicated spaces for all the family. Here, she shares her latest design project – a practical and stylish kid’s playroom.

Colouring book

Erica wanted to create a fun space for her children that would fire their imagination and creativity, so colour was always going to be a key ingredient. Erica chose a dark blue base colour for the walls, and then commissioned a bespoke mural to bring together all the colours from the rest of the house – including her beloved leopard print! For the shutters, Erica used our custom colour service to match the shutters to her striking green stair carpet. She told us: “This beautiful rich green transforms the space, but equally it pulls a little bit of the outside in. We’re surrounded by green grass and trees, so I love it.”

Count to five

Not content with vibrant colour on the walls, Erica has harnessed the principle of the fifth wall to great effect – choosing a yellow and white chevron wallpaper for the ceiling.  And in fact, with such strong colours throughout the room, the ceiling almost demands a bold look of its own. “I wanted to liven it up, and the chevron wallpaper makes an instant impact”, Erica explains.

Balancing act

Creative fun equals mess, so Erica has made sure that this space has plenty of storage to keep things under control.  An entire wall is dedicated to a storage unit made from painted kitchen cabinets. There’s plenty of room to store away all the toys and books, but also a huge surface for colouring and creative play – not to mention a desk area for homework. Erica is keen to stress the importance of storage, She tells us: “Even though it’s a children’s room, I really wanted to create a sophisticated vibe, and I think with that you have to have storage and you have to have a little bit of order”.

Garden party

Erica chose this room for her playroom as it leads directly onto the garden, so in the summer months the kids can easily access the outside space. With both French doors and a window to dress, it can be difficult to create a balanced and uniform look, so shutters are an ideal choice. And as Erica explains, there are lots of other benefits to shutters, especially for a children’s room: “They’re inherently child safe and incredibly easy to look after. The children run into the garden and open the doors with their sticky fingers, but the shutters are very durable and just really easy to wipe down”.
