Textiles and fashion designer Pearl Lowe is well known for her love of vintage style and her gorgeous Somerset home is the subject of this month’s Lifestyles feature. Pearl takes us on a tour of her stunning Georgian property and shares her top tips for designing a modern home with an eclectic, vintage vibe.

My favourite thing to do when I’m decorating a house is to mix textures and different prints

Faded glory

The stately living room in Pearl’s Georgian home perfectly reflects the different facets of her design personality. Rock chic animal prints are pared with demure florals and feminine fringing for a look that’s inviting and intriguing in equal measure. Pearl chose elegant Oralia Ochre curtains for her impressive feature windows, bringing a sense of understated elegance to this eclectic space.

Victorian Boho

Not content to settle for a house that simply has good bones, Pearl is always looking for new ways to add texture and pattern. Pearl told us: ‘I always put cast iron baths in bathrooms. I think they look so chic. I recently covered ours in hot pink velvet. The bathroom looks really decadent now.” Pearl chose a sophisticated Delizia Nectarine Roman blind to finish this look. The classic floral print ties in with the overall period feel, while the vibrant orange hue pops against the pink.

A room with a view

The kitchen commands views over the rolling Somerset countryside so in this room, Pearl wanted to blend her love of luxe, vintage styling with really practical features. Pearl chose Teflon-coated Etch Dove Roller blinds for the huge French doors in this room. The semi-sheer fabric allows lots of natural light to flood in, without it getting too bright. When not in use, the blinds fold up really neatly so the doors can be thrown open, and in the early evening they can be pulled down to create a cosy ambience.

North of the border

Pearl has created her own homage to the highlands by teaming two of Scotland’s most iconic prints, the paisley print chair and a Wallace Chartreuse tartan Roman blind. Pretty star wallpaper and a sparkly sequined cushion provide the glitz, while the battered leather trunk doubles up as both storage and side table. One of Pearl’s signature fringed lampshades frames this stylish nook. Pearl says of her favourite accessory: “Fringe lamps work so beautifully in all rooms, especially bedrooms. I have so many. They’re great if you want the 1920s/70s Biba look”.

Grown-up glamour

As part of our Mother’s Day Design Challenge, Pearl and her model daughter, Daisy Lowe, each transformed a bedroom in their signature style. Pearl gave us a masterclass in modern vintage design, creating a very grown-up bedroom using this season’s must-have pink hues. The boho peacock chair and deep pile rug brought a louche, decadent feel, which Pearl offset with delicately patterned wallpaper, an embroidered piano shawl and sophisticated faux-silk Clarence Chemise curtains.

Vintage style, made-to-measure

Pearl met with her local advisor to browse our fabric collections and, having made her selections, her advisor measured up before returning to expertly fit her beautiful, made-to-measure window dressings. Period properties are often challenging, with lots of uneven surfaces to work with, but as the experts in made-to-measure window dressings, our advisors make sure of a superb finish every time.
