The Kinetic Carpet, a concept design from Hillarys, would apply energy-harvesting techniques to home furnishings and create a means of supplying low-energy appliances with electricity.
In the simplest terms, the Kinetic Carpet would harvest the ambient energy of footsteps and convert this into electricity, which could then be stored in batteries or immediately used as energy throughout the home.

The Kinetic Carpet would feature a thin base comprising a web of ‘power blocks’. Each ‘power block’ contains piezoelectric material, which would compress up to 8mm under the weight of a footstep. This movement creates the stress in the piezoelectric material needed to generate a charge.
Once generated, the charge travels through the base of the Kinetic Carpet either to a battery for storage or directly to power home appliances.
When the weight of a footstep is removed, the affected ‘power blocks’ would return to their original form.
Of course, the Kinetic Carpet would also boast the same extensive range of wool, blended and manmade piles as seen throughout the Hillarys range. So comfort and style are guaranteed too.
It’s believed that the Kinetic Carpet will generate and store enough power during the daytime, if positioned in a high-traffic space like a hallway, to power an LED light system in a home.
