How are curtains measured?

It's surprisingly tricky to accurately measure curtains. The width of your curtains depends on the width of your window, how much space you have around it, and the overall look you'd like to achieve. The depth of your curtains is based on where your curtain pole or track is positioned. You may want to position it as high as possible if you're trying to make your window look taller. It's also worth thinking about if you want your curtains to puddle on the floor. That's quite a lot to consider, but with Hillarys, measuring and fitting is included in our service as standard so you don't need to worry. Your local advisor will provide tailored advice for you, your windows, and your budget.

Do curtains keep heat in?

Yes, all our made to measure curtains can help to keep a space warmer and banish draughts. They do this by reducing the air exchange between your cold windows and warm room. Heavier fabrics, such as velvet curtains, are great insulators, especially when they're teamed with a thermal curtain or blackout curtain lining. At your in-home appointment, your local advisor can recommend the best cosy options for your home.

How to wash curtains?

All of our curtain fabrics are dry clean only, but there are plenty of ways to keep them looking fresh for longer. The easiest way to clean your curtains is to use the soft brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner, designed for furniture items and upholstery. Our curtains cleaning guide contains more handy hints on caring for your curtains.

What other window dressing options are there?

If curtains are not for you, we've plenty of other ways to dress your windows. Take a look at our wide range of blinds, including electric blinds and smart options for stylish convenience. Or go for the timeless appeal of window shutters, with adjustable louvers that let you control levels of light and privacy.

Should curtains touch the floor?

Generally, this depends on personal preference but there are some style and practical factors you could consider. Curtains are a great way to block draughts and provide better insulation, and longer curtains with no gap between the fabric and the floor will help make sure as little heat as possible can escape, keeping your room at a comfortable temperature. It's worth bearing in mind that floor-length curtains may gather dust and dirt more easily. Our curtains cleaning guide has plenty of handy tips on how to maintain yours.

Should curtains cover a radiator?

You can have your curtains covering a radiator, but it means there's a chance they could be blocking warm air from entering your room. If this is important to you, you might want to choose curtains that either hang above the radiator and are short enough not to obstruct the heat flow.

What curtain accessories are available?

Choosing made to measure curtains is all about being able to tailor the design to your taste, and with our variety of custom options you can create a look that’s unique to your style. When it comes to accessories, all our curtain fabrics are available as cushion covers and tie backs for a truly coordinated result.
