Baby it’s cold outside – BLINDING IDEAS TO HELP CUT THE COST OF BILLS

November 26th, 2009 by Hillarys

“As we brace ourselves for cold weather, keeping warm becomes big on our list of priorities,” says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys.

“While piling on leg warmers and layers is one way, there are some simple things you can do to turn your home from a draughty ice palace into a cosy hideaway.

“And according to research from Nottingham University on behalf of Hillarys, homeowners can make significant savings on fuel bills simply by selecting the right window dressing.”

The study compared and evaluated various blind and fabric types and Cascade Romans which fall in lovely soft waterfalls of fabric, topped the study as the most energy efficient blinds of all. They’re perfect for a cosy bedroom or living room, especially if the room is north facing or has several large windows.

Conservatories can almost become‘no go’ areas during the chillier winter months. Pleated blinds with an insulating backing can help to keep heat in so you stay snug and warm whilst saving on energy.

Radiators are often placed under windows and then covered up by heavy curtains that can stop the heat circulating properly. Roman blinds give the luxurious look of curtains but fit snugly into the window recess, keeping radiators free to do their job effectively.

Top tips for child safety around window blinds

July 2nd, 2009 by Hillarys

All parents will want to keep their children safe at home, and recent reports about children getting caught in window blind cords may put you off buying blinds, but Hillarys can help ensure that blinds can be safe with the help of product innovation and our top tips:

  • Use cordless blinds in children’s bedrooms, Hillarys suggest choosing pleated blinds with tab opening to ensure no cords at all
  • Alternatively try pull cords on roller blinds – a short cord that hangs from the middle of the roller, eliminating the need for sidewinder chains with loops
  • Move beds and cribs away from windows or any furniture that children can climb on
  • Only buy blinds manufactured after 2001 – when the new safety regulations came in, every single Hillarys blind is made-to-measure to your exact requirements
  • Keep all cords out of reach of children
  • Ask your advisor for the shortest cords possible for each blind you buy or tie them out of a child’s reach
  • All of Hillarys made-to-measure blinds come with a warning sign to highlight the dangers of cords on blinds
  • Opt for wands rather than cords on products like Venetian blinds
  • Use metal cleats that fix to the wall to tie loose cords around
  • For the conservatory we offer the option of remote controlled blinds so there’s no cords hanging down to worry about
