Downsizing can mark the start of a new chapter, but making a smaller space feel like home takes careful thought.
As a recent home mover having downsized, I’ve learned that creating a home that truly works for you is more than just moving somewhere smaller, it’s about being intentional with every choice.
After years in a busy family home, life had changed, and I was ready for something more manageable. For 12 years, my four-bedroom home was the heart of family life, birthdays, teenage parties and the daily bustle of raising two boys, now in their twenties. But once they had both moved out, the house felt far too big for just me. Financially, the numbers didn’t add up either.
When I found a two-bedroom Victorian mid-terrace, it felt right for this new chapter. It had already been renovated, which meant I could focus on making it feel like mine.

The biggest challenge was adjusting from a full home to something smaller. Learning how to downsize your home takes time, and I had to be really considered about what I brought with me.
I went room by room, sorting items into what to keep, donate or sell. I also looked for practical, space-saving finds, picking up a few pieces from auction houses and Facebook Marketplace.
It was a process, but this phased approached helped me create a space that felt lighter and less cluttered. In a smaller home, functionality becomes really important. Every item needs to earn its place. It definitely made me rethink how I use space day to day.
Before moving, window dressings weren’t a priority. At the time, I was more focused on packing, sorting and getting settled. But once everything else started to come together, I realised how much was missing.
Privacy and security were high on my list, especially as my new home was on a busy urban street. I also wanted better light control and something that would complement the style of the house. Without blinds, curtains or shutters, the rooms didn’t feel finished.
